Shane Kilbride

I coached minor hockey in Alberta for nineteen years, including eight at the junior level, and I have skated with a lot of kids who were told at twelve that they were done. I open evenings because that is when the rink empties and the families are home. Two kinds of calls come in. Skills questions, which I handle on video: edges, stride mechanics, a shot that has no weight behind it, a goalie who drops too early. And family questions, which are often the harder ones: whether to pay for another camp, whether to move a fourteen-year-old to a different team, how to tell if a kid still wants this. I will be honest with you about the second kind. Minor hockey takes a lot of money from families on the promise of a path that very few take, and nobody in the business of selling camps is going to say so. I am not selling camps.
