Freight forwarding and customs: ocean imports into the US

18 años de experiencia
Correo verificado

Eighteen years in freight forwarding out of Houston, mostly ocean import and a fair amount of project cargo. I work nights because that is when Asia is awake and because a container problem does not keep until morning. Where I earn my keep: a shipment held by customs and nobody can tell you why, demurrage and per diem running while a broker is slow, and classification disputes where the duty rate hangs on one digit. I can usually tell you in a short call whether the hold is documentary, which you can fix today, or an examination, which you cannot. I also do a lot of pre-shipment work with small importers, because the expensive mistakes are all made before the box leaves. Incoterms chosen wrongly, no ISF filed, a supplier invoice that does not match the packing list. Twenty minutes before you book costs less than a week of per diem after you land.

Lo que le distingue

I can tell you whether a hold is documentary or an examination, and that is the whole decision. One you fix this afternoon, the other you simply wait out, and knowing which stops you spending money on the wrong one.
