Roadside diagnostics when you are stuck and the shop is closed

I have run a mobile repair truck in the Sacramento Valley for nineteen years, and most of my work happens after six in the evening, because that is when people actually break down. Highway 5 at eleven at night, a transmission that will not shift, a tow truck quoted at four hundred dollars. That call is my normal. On a session I want three things: the dash lights that are on, a code read if you have a scanner, and the sound of the engine over your phone. With those I can usually tell you whether the car is drivable to a shop or whether you need the tow. Knowing which of those two it is saves most people more than the session costs. I work on American and Japanese drivetrains, gas and diesel, and I am honest about the limit: I cannot see under your car. What I can do is keep you from paying for a tow you did not need, or from driving a car that should not be driven.

Ce qui le distingue

I will tell you to stop driving when that is the answer. A head gasket going at sixty miles an hour costs you an engine; a tow costs you three hundred dollars. People call me to avoid the tow and sometimes I am the one who insists on it.
