🇺🇸Freight forwarding and customs: ocean imports into the US
Eighteen years in freight forwarding out of Houston, mostly ocean import and a fair amount of project cargo. I work nights because that is when Asia is awake and because a container problem does not keep until morning. Where I earn my keep: a shipment held by customs and nobody can tell you why, demurrage and per diem running while a broker is slow, and classification disputes where the duty rate hangs on one digit. I can usually tell you in a short call whether the hold is documentary, which you can fix today, or an examination, which you cannot. I also do a lot of pre-shipment work with small importers, because the expensive mistakes are all made before the box leaves. Incoterms chosen wrongly, no ISF filed, a supplier invoice that does not match the packing list. Twenty minutes before you book costs less than a week of per diem after you land.
