🇺🇸Screen printing and illustration: getting a clean print
- 15 years of experience
I have been screen printing in Philadelphia for fifteen years, posters and apparel, and illustrating alongside it. I print my own work and other people's, which means I have made every mistake twice. The problems people bring me are almost always in the stages nobody photographs: the screen, the emulsion exposure and the registration. A print that looks muddy is usually a mesh and exposure issue, not an ink issue, and everybody blames the ink. Registration on a four-colour job is the other one, and there is a cheap jig that solves most of it. I also talk about pricing, which for illustrators and printers is the real problem. People charge for materials and their time at a rate they would never accept from an employer. I will do the arithmetic with you and you will probably raise your prices, which is the point.

What sets them apart
A muddy print is a mesh and exposure problem, not an ink problem, and everyone changes the ink first. Fixing the screen stage is free and it changes everything you print afterwards.
