Grain farming: rotations, soil and machinery decisions

27 years of experience
Email verified

I farm thirty-two hundred acres of wheat, canola and soybeans in southern Manitoba, third generation. Twenty-seven years of my own decisions, including several expensive ones I would rather you did not repeat. Where a conversation helps most: deciding a rotation when prices have moved, working out whether a machinery purchase pays for itself at your acreage, and reading soil tests that nobody has explained to you. That last one matters more than people think, because a lot of fertiliser gets bought on habit rather than on the test. I am not an agronomist and I do not sell inputs. I am a farmer who has run the numbers on his own operation for a long time and who will run them on yours honestly, including telling you when the answer is that your acreage does not justify the equipment you are looking at.

What sets them apart

I will run the cost per acre on a machinery purchase with you, honestly. Most of the equipment people ask me about does not pay for itself at their acreage, and a dealer will never be the one to say so.
