Horses: lameness, hoof balance and the vet call decision

24 years of experience
Email verified

I have worked with horses for twenty-four years, as a farrier for the last seventeen, across the Carolinas. Most of what I am called about is lameness, and most lameness questions come down to whether this is a farrier problem, a vet problem, or a management problem. I am genuinely useful on three things. Watching a horse move on video and telling you which limb and roughly where. Looking at hoof photographs and telling you whether the trim or shoeing is contributing. And telling you when to stop asking me and call the vet today, which happens often and which I am never shy about. I can also go through a pre-purchase situation with you. People buy horses on photographs and a short ride, and there are five things to look at in the feet alone that will tell you about the next two years of bills. Those five things take twenty minutes to learn and I would rather you learned them before you paid.
