Board-level repair: laptops, consoles and the shops that say unfixable

I do component-level electronics repair in Portland and have for fifteen years. Most shops diagnose by swapping boards; I work with a hot air station and a microscope, which means the answer is often cheaper than the one you were given. Where I help most: a laptop that a store quoted a full logic board for, water damage that somebody has declared terminal, or a device with data on it that nobody has tried to recover before replacing the board. There is almost always a step between working and landfill, and it is usually a connector, a blown capacitor or a corroded trace. I work evenings because this is also my day job and because the people who call me are usually weighing a quote they got that afternoon. Send me photographs of the board under good light before the session and we will spend the time on the answer instead of the setup.

What sets them apart

Before you accept a board replacement, ask whether anybody pulled your data off. Boards get swapped and data gets lost every day, and it is the only part of the device that cannot be bought again.
